January 21, 1952. Hualarig (5000) Dpto. Areguá.
Perúos about 200 yds. larger at road and then 1 month ago, central spot half
submerged. About 20 flamingoes in groups at road end of lake. Hard hail
in mid-afternoon; ceasing about 4:30 p.m.
January 22, 1952. Temps. +1°, +10°C. At 7 a.m., 3½o carúas, rumble-
7-1, 3-5. Usual
no forming below. Watched vicuñas & mopped 7-8 a.m. Stormy
hail & rain in afternoon; the rain only at night
dranks from E. not noticed until 3 p.m., then light rain.
January 23, 1952. About 3½o carúas at 6 a.m., not overcast
completely until 3 p.m. Much sunshine in morning & not cold. Watched
vicuña & mopped 7-11 a.m. Only 20 birds all day; road difficult impassable.
January 24, 1952. Temps. -1°C., +11°C. ½" ice on water. Also sem-
ulus overcast 7 a.m. Watched vicuña & mopped 7-12. Overcast
at 4 p.m. but no precipitation all day.
January 25, 1952. ½" snow on ground. Temps. -½°, +9°C. Hunted
tinamous 7-8 a.m.; saw none. Watched vicuña 8:30-13, 1-2:30.
Set 20 traps in lake & rocky draw near camp. Rain,
hail, & snow intermittent after 1 p.m.
January 26, 1952. Temps. -3½°, +10°C. 2" snow on ground. Hunt-
ed tinamous m. km. 143 from 7-10 a.m. Killed 2 Tinametos. Shot 2
Nethin lake near camp. Many watched vicuña 3-4:30 p.m.
No precipitation today. No catch in 20 traps.
January 27, 1952. Sunday. Frosty. Thin carúas clouds. Nearly
clear last night. Min. temp. -2°F. No catch in traps. Drove
to Snute, 20 miles & return, looking at vicuña. Car repairs.
January 28, 1952. Slight precip. last evening. Temps. 0°C. min.
+11°C. max. All streets overcast 6 a.m. Watched vicuña 8-13, A.
with rain.
Light snow 8 a.m. -11 a.m. Rain hail after 5 p.m. Some sunshine
at midday. Found freshly dead jiv. of vicuña m. km. 138.
