January 15, 1952 Haylarco, 15000', Dpto. Arequipa
Much more water than before; small lake near camp, fairly dry, 1/3 full. Temp. min. +1 C. last night. 1" snow on ground & overcast at 6 a.m. Peregrine & Harris died birds. Snow rain 1/2 hr. about 2:30 p.m. Watched vicunas 4 - 5 p.m. Dusk after dark.
January 16, 1952. Patches snow on ground in morning; station overcast. Watched vicunas 8-1 a.m., about 30 flammiger at road end Lgo. Peruna. Flock 22 fawns on Campa Pizana (km. 13 1/2). Overcast all day. Heavy hail late afternoon.
January 17, 1952. Temps. since Jan. 15, 0°, +4 1/2 C. Overcast; fog until 8 a.m. Went to tinamou hill NNW km. 14 1/2. Snow 2" deep there. Saw 8 Tinamotis & killed 3. Returned to camp. Rain & hails from noon on, intermittent.
January 18, 1952. Temps. +1 C., +9 C. Overcast morning but no snow on ground. Hunted tinamous near km. 143; saw 4, got 0. M. set 4 live traps near km. 141 1/2 from Peru. Yesterday she caught 9 P. bolivianus NW of km. 143 (from dry), & kept in cage. Watched vicunas 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Rain & wet snow in evening.
January 19, 1952 Temps., +1/2°, +9 1/2 C. (under trees). Foggy+ snowing lightly, 3" snow on ground; 6 a.m. Went to tinamou hill nr. km. 14 1/2 & shot 2 Tinamotis. May got 2 A. jilebei in live traps at km. 141 1/2 (from Peru) & kept in cage.
January 20, 1952. Starts for Solares but motor in gear delayed until 10:30. Went to km. 101 & hunted tinamous for 2 hrs. Rain commenced, hard. Returned to camp. Water level high, perhaps highest yet. Boat to Arequipa impossible at spot.
January 21, 1952 Temps. (same Jan. 14) 0 C., +9 C. Fog until 8 a.m. No rain at night. Watched vicunas 8-4. Lake
