C. Koford 149 Journal January 13, 1952 To nr. Vilque, Dpto. Puno, Peru Departed 8:30 & drove toward Puno. Few sheaves remains 14'100' before reaching Tiniapalca (13600'). Hunted in schm ½ hr. at km. 11 2, 14 400', but saw no tinamous. Lake at km. 9 2 from Puno had 100+ flamingos, teal, coots & gulls on grass plots, + pair geese with 4 swimming downy young. At a lake nr. km. 8 1, some gulls still setting tight on grass plots, two gray downy young gulls on one plot & 2 adults beside, most coots half gray. On shore 3 gray downy birds with white or riled heads upper neck - grebes? Several brown swallows near shore km. 9 2 lake. Some apparent jnr. gulls - partial black caps - at km. 8 1 lake. Continued on to camino in area km. 55, grassy slopes flute near stream, & hunted for tinamous. A local Indian showed me where he had seen partridge, in greenish rather open place on gentle slope where thicker grass near, but found none. At dusk I drove from km. 51 to 60 slowly, & saw one Rathoprocta about km. 57. Camped dry good. No traffic. Over cast, & much hail & hard rain at night. 13600' elev. To Huaylarcq, 15000', Dpto. Aruquos; January 14, 1952. Hunted 5 a.m. - 11 a.m. Saw 2 partrige, 1 codorniz, & shot 1 perdig. Shot a parachute, one of flock 15+. Spice tails & Cercloides cannon, yellow thragylus, finches & small gray one, flickers, doves, a gray sparrow with white subterminal tail markings. At 11 a.m., overcast + occasion- ally sprinkling, started back toward Tiniapalca & Huaylarcq 14'100' & probable Tinamotis flew from near road at km. 62½. Overcast all day & arrived Huaylarcq camp 4 p.m. Shot 2 teal, & 2 viscachas, + 1 goose on the way. Rain's snowin evening. Thermometer (since Jan. 13 a.m.), 0°, + 9°C.
