December 17, 1951 Salinas, 22 mi. E. Arequipa, 14200'
apparently of Attogis in a sandy draw (straight line, 3 ties).
Occasional mouse tracks (?), on sandy slopes where
few rocks & stiff s&her. A few clouds in late afternoon.
To Arequipa, Peru
December 18, 1951. Clean, cold. Traps held 2 P. derwinii,
1 a large 7, + 1 Alcedon andinae . Put up 1 each. Drove
to Arequipa. Set 10-12 traps at hm. 51 (13700'), hm.
45½ (12700'), hm. 38¼ (11600'), and hm. 31½ (10750').
Stayed at Hotel New Cshute at 12000' Arequipa
December 19, 1951. Shopping & business.
December 20, 1951. Sst L. O. Pearson in bus arrived
December 21, 1951 Departed Arequipa about 6 p.m. +
camped about hm. 28. Dry + not cold at night.
December 22, 1951. To La. Salinas, Dpto. Arequipa
Picked up traps left Dec. 18. At 10500' catch 2 Phyllostic
derwinii + remain 3 other + severe pulled out traps.
Dry shallow canyon, brush with some rocks, purple-
wild flowered thorny bush, some rocks, no water.
At 11300', 5 A. yalobiii, 2 Phyllostic d., 1 bird (+ shot a
Upucuthia), in 12 traps. Boulders, several birds ladders
including thorned one 7' high (with balls of thorns 1'
diam.), apparent old nests/roosts of birds, large 4"-leaved
pale Tomontore brush. No open water but rather shallow
not very dry. At 12300', 1 Alcedon andinae , + P. derwinii,
in 12 traps. A scrub-oak like 4' high bush, Polypsis
to 3', boulders, sandy - all nice near boulders. At
13300' in 10 traps, 2 P. derwinii + 1 bird (same as at 12300')

Polypsis to 5' high; some grass, boulder, steep slope.
