C. Koford 134 Journal Dpto. Arequipa, Peru. November 7, 1951 Huaylaco, 52 mi. ENE Arequipa, 15,000 long, shallow with almost solid growth water plants in parts, with many ducks, coots, gulls, & a few geese and flamingos. No outlet. Vicuña com- mon between km. 134 & 144. November 8, 1951 Moved trail to near stream near km. 136 marker. Yarita comes round on slopes to S. of stream, then dry from here to the lake about 2 miles below. Set 3 traps near 2" drain. Linnear in sand near grass clumps, & 6 near yarita & rocks. Windy from E. & overcast. Spent after- oon censuing vicuñas km. 132-143. Light rain late afternoon. November 9, 1951 Lost steel trap to fox; snap traps held 1 A. jilskii . Light snow on ground & overcast. Wet snow falling & strong E. wind 8 a.m. Watched vicuñas near km. 138 mark from 11 to 4. Saw territorial squabbles, re- action to fox, orientation to wind in snowstorm. Over- cast all day with occasional rain or snow, wet snow falling 5 p.m. Strong E. wind all day. November 10, 1951 Traps held one mm. & Phyllos darwinius . Increased trap line to about 30 traps, mostly among rocks near yarita & tola. About 1" snow on ground at dawn but soon melted. Half overcast at 6 a.m.; 9/10 by 10 a.m. Saw caracaras, Thinicorax, Georitta, Phyllosus plebeyo, Calopterus, Nettin (flock at point 100' from trail), gulls (birds black), vireachas, fox tracker. Rain & hail at 10:30 a.m. Watched vicuñas 2 to 5 p.m. Snow in eve- ning. Saw a few ssine tails near rocks & grazis.
