October 29/451 Oconeque, 7000±', Dpto. Puno
from cavity in rock overhanging trail. Saw droppings on trail below hole + skt bote (289, 107, 5 discarded).
Possums said to be common here. Bears had been killed several times , said to raid corn patcher, especially in March + April (end wet season). Small wrens common just Oconeque. Shot a pewee & swallow, both common. Banana tree ! here but fruit green. Saw papaya + armadillos. Saw a torrent deer standing on rock in middle of wide rush- ing river; it dove when I 50 yds away after quick movements of its head. Set 20 traps. Shot a mat- mat intree near river & saw another. Voice a bel- low deep slightly double pup-pup, like man slow by chopping on hollow log in distance. The shot one, wounded, fled 2' into hole in rock wall when I approached - to out of sight! In a dark damp canyon saw white specimen (no pellets), + looking up saw an owl (?/1301). Woods, wife, + son (O+) arrived on mulez from Bella Pompea about 3:30p.m. Woods about 45, energetic, collective, & full of hunting experience. Ford of guns of which she had several of finest. Knew animals fairly well. S'dt & deer at Oconeque, different than huemul up higher.
Two kinds pecas, tapis (sachavara), ocelots (common), but not far from Santa Domingo. Car- assaws, guans, chachalacos : Monkeys rare. about 30 tuquis (each of roda) seen on way up
