c. Koford 123 Journal October 11, 1951 To nr. Sta. Lucia, Dpto. Puno, Peru Summit. Half cloudy in afternoon; cumulo-nimbus to N. & E. Cloudy area seems to end near Anguiza-Lima road and on Anguiza side of cordillera. From Tinco- palca road climbs to 14800'+, then through gossy rocky country. Fork to Juliaca (86 km.) + Puno (101 km.) at km. 101. We went toward Juliaca and camped about 81/2 (La Salacocha) miles from this fork on edge of lake 2+ miles long at 13500'. Red-brown small gulls, grey + white gulls, giant coots, swallows, Camelode, Bontrichia, Netins, Lanius leu. Coots adding to islands now scarcely above level of surface. Set 20+ traps in burrows in banks, among grass clumps, near rocks + rock salients. October 12, 1951. Friday. To Juliaca, Dpto. Puno Traps held: 1 P. dominis, (Mustangs), 2 P. pictus; all tarnished & discarded. Shot one swallow (specimen). Drave on through grassy dry hills over rough rock to Juliaca. Swift rain 20'wide at Sta. Lucia. Visited Duffies, stopped, camped 3 mi. from town at bridge on road to Uramone. Warm, 71/10 overnight, at Juliaca. October 13, 1951. To nr. Asillo, Dpto. Puno, Peru. Clear night with near-full moon. No frost; probably did not freeze. Saw a bullfrog-sized frog in bottom of river under bridge near camp; + several rainbow trout. Returned to Juliaca for luncheon. Departed 10 p.m. toward Asillo. Camped 6 miles before Asillo. Heavily overcast, thunder + lightning. Rain at summit until after midnight.
