122 Journal October 10, 1951 Ocururo-lmata, Dpto. Puno Peru. Antonia de Esquilache. Few birds. Few habitations. Road fair dirt single lane. By 10 a.m., sky 7/10 cumulus + fair breeze. 31 miles from Ocururo; 15000'; passed giant 200 yl. long lake with 12+ coots & 4 coot islands. One coot adult in water with 3 downy young. One sitting on island w/6 eggs + mother came up beside it. The coots make loud low sounds - almost human. 60 miles from Ocururo passed a 1 mile long lake with 20+ flamingos, many geese & ducks. Very windy so did not stay. Imata 67 miles from Ocururo. Camped on sandy ground 6 miles beyond Imata at edge of hill of fantastically shaped rock columns up to 30' in height. Clear here & to S. Set 2 scotops near road. October 11, 1951. Trops held 2 P. darwinii that an Agrioquia. Found caracara nest with egg + adult on. Clear in morning; below freezing night. 11 am departed for Arequipa road. Pass passed thru low sandy hills with bunch grass & tola rarely over 6" high to 13 miles from Imata, then a nearly unvegetated flat area. 19 miles from Imata reached Arequipa road, 14000'; Imata 35 km., Puno 167 km. Drive toward Juliaca. Saw 200+ vicunas in 7 miles of highest road. Summit, km +43-1/2 from Arequipa; 15350' by altimeter. Trinopalea at km. 123 from Puno. Km. + (Total 278 Km. Puno - Arequipa). In Trinopalea area, nearly solid cover of 2' high tola with narrow thick leaves & (now) small yellow flowers. Shup at 15000' on Trinopalea side of
