October 8, 1951.
Aricoima, 15000', Dpto. Puno, Peru
Min. temp. -1/2°C. last night. Lightly snowing all overnight
at daybreak & on into morning. Mary caught 2 A. jelskii
in 4 live traps put out in SE Canyon last yesterday. Light
snow + rain + no prospect clearing. At 3 p.m. depart-
ed with family in jeep to explore cordillera west of
Ayaviri & Juliaca. Drove to near lake 3 miles beyond
Asillo (9 p.m.) and camped. Overcast. Heavy rain in night.
October 9, 1951
To nr. Ocoruro, 13700', Dpto. Puno
Still overcast & occasionally sprinkling. Drove to Aya-
viri & bought supplies. Then took Umocine road to
Halli (25 mi. from Ayaviri), and on. Turnoff to Ocor-
Ocoruro 4 1/2 miles on. A mud town about 20 miles
from Halli, 1 mile beyond turnoff toward Ocororo.
A lake with reeds, cotsa, ducks, 10 miles beyond
Halli. We drove up Ocoruro road to O. (25 miles
from junction - 70 mi. from Ayaviri) Ocororo =
Cocero-sized unpainted mud village with control
station. Drove on 5 miles & camped (13750') in
rolling grassy country with thm bushes + few
rocks. Overcast but breaking up to E. & W.
October 10, 1951
Heard aws in night. Clearly morning & about 0°.
Departed 0830 & drove toward Quota slowly. 18 miles for
Ocoruro - we were at 15250' in rolling country where
more gr Pyrophyllum than grass. Naked rocky hills
higher than general level. Some vicunas and several
herds of alpacas. Dry appearing area at near San
