To nr. Asillo, Dpto. Puno Peru
to Challi a rather poor flat road, then took road back to
Ayaviri (26 miles, road thru Unacuriri better than Chugulani
like road). Drove on then to about 6 miles on road before Seilke,
13000', & camped at foot of steep dry slope of cliffs + rugged boul-
ders. Set 25+ snaretraps among rocks + shrubs on slope. Saw
2 old nests of Andes (?) in niches in rocks near foot. Many
withered points + owl droppings. Saw several wisschaws. Most
vegetation dried up. Saw falcon chasing feline. Heard lawn owl.
Clear most fright.
October 5, 1951.
To Aricoma, 15000', Dpto. Puno
Traps held 2 Phyllotis (orile?) ? (decided), other ? 1280);+
1 Akodon boliviensis (? 1281). Shot a Petogura, another hummer,
chinchil, & falcon. A grey finch + chinchila in flocks on
grassy grass at edges rocks. At least 3 falcons seen +
2 Petogura, 10+ other small hummers. Saw at least 3 of a
rufous-browed flycatcher with black + white on head (specimen
from California). Returned to near Rosario & I fished for 2 hours
taking 14 rainbow eye to 12" long. Pond near Rosarita just
layed Rosario had a small green-legged coot in part nearly
Flamingoes in (12+) in nearly dry lake before reaching Seelk
Asillo (1 mile before). Returned to camp after dark.
October 6, 1951. Overcast most of day with light snow
in late afternoon. Put up specimens. Stock men Nores.
October 7, 1951. Min. temp. + 1/2 C. Light snow on ground+
stratus overcast in morning; occasional snowflakes. Watched
vicuna group in N Canyon 8-12 M. Saw Snow, rori, +
overcast all day. Max. temp. + 10 C.
