C. Koford Journal October 3, 1951 To nr. Asillo, Dpto. Puno, Peru 5/10 forecast at 7 a.m. Prepared for running trip. Departed 11:30 from Arima. Light snow on ground at foot of Lake Arima. Rain, thunder, lightning at Cusco. No gas to be had so drove on to Palena. We had tea with Sra. Dommet + Orrells. They had teak, snow, Tinguirico + dove in food box, fresh water & hummel birds. They got up gas at bleros + we drove on to lake about 3 miles beyond Seillo + spent night there. At ponds near Rosario many Avocettin, + black-snowy night heron (many pair.), as well as gallinules + yellow-legs. Rainy at Palena when we left. October 4, 1951 To Chuquibambilla, Dpto. Puno No rain at night but overcast. Many bird sounds from lake in night. The big flower screams much at night. Other sounds probably coots. Great coots common (100+) on lake. Two helped carry green lake reeds to a 3' diameter island upon which were 3 or 4 damny young. At least a dozen similar green islands about 50 yds. from shore + 50 yds. apart. At least 3 pairs cinnamon teal seen, 100% of the black & white headed ducks, 100% Avocettin, ruddy(?) ducks 50+ (one alongside other with tail vertical & pumping head vertically up & down). Two besides small grebes, one reddish brown with black + white head, other gray + white with black + white head. A line-one walking on green lake reeds. 1 Wilson snipe on shore. 10+ Larus, some with solid black heads. Morning calm + clear. We drove to Ayaviri (14 miles from Turiapate - Arica junction) and shopped. Then 10 miles to Chuquis-bambilla where dustets not present. We drove 16 miles
