Gymnogyps californianus
February 12, 1946 Whiteacre Pk., Calif.
Whiteacre Pk. Another adult circled down &
alighted alongside at 12:08+. Ruffed high up on
both. This series of ledges - on the slope side
of Napier Rim, offers many nesting possibilities.
The birds moved 6+' apart after 5+ minutes
and were still that way at 12:30. They occas-
ionally preened or looked at their feet - very quies-
cent - just standing - right side to sun. Breeze
very light. About 12:15 saw 2 circling & rising at
same level over W. Rim. Air nearly calm at times -
smokey haze in valleys. The rising cordon seemed
to be using more dihedral than usual - lizzard
like . 12:50- no change in the 2 perched adults;
they appeared:
[illegible]
atop the 60+' high ledge,
the highest in a series
of + such ledges, 150+
below level of highest
ledge on W. Napier Rim. On
the steep slope below the birds are many Bz., some with
bare limbs which appear suitable for perches &
roosts. About 1:07+1/2, outer adult spread wings
& sunned back. Ruff down during this process,
& the bird preened under parts with bill. 1:10
folded wings slowly, one a little before the other.
1:14+, this outer bird walked around inner one, head
down & one wing half raised. The other calmly walk-
