Gymnogyps californianus
February 7, 1946
Nr. Whiteacre Pk., Clif.
I do not believe the cave was used last
year. At 11:50 I entered the cave - an
adult condor soared 100±' overhead a few min-
utes later (first seen flying today), then was
heard to land nearby. Did & I collected bones -
including epiphyses of bone, one rodent humerus
(?), a piece of ungulate scapula, & rib fragments, &
a weathered carnivore-like tooth. The usual lay:
number of scans was present - hollow with
end chewed off. A few bones were found at rear
most part of the cave - perhaps rodents carried
them there. The place where egg was found was
dry & had a slight hollow with a deeper hollow
in the center - no caver tracks or scratch marks
were present, however, & this hollow was sticks
littered like the rest of the floor. Left the cave
at 12:15 - saw two adults perched in a Ps.
step the cliff to S. of the cave, 150±' above
us & 100±yds. uphill. Probably a pair which
will nest this year, perhaps at this cave.
New is evidence of the pair being together before
keeping company at the
nest site before the egg is laid. I hope to get
a good idea of incubation time this year - perhaps
will find a February egg at this spot. The trail
had been repaired & brushed out as far as White-
sore Pkls but not beyond - yet was possible
