Gymnogyps californianus

Nr. Mt. Posy Calif.
quietly about 10' downhill from the condor. The
condor put head down for 2-5 seconds, then raised
it for about the same interval. About 2:20 a sec-
on vulture alighted & walked up the slope to near
the condor. The condor fed on - it appeared to be an
immature with some orange on head. Rarely did over 3
seconds pass without the head coming up for a
look around. At times the buzzards seemed within
about 6'. At 2:24 a 5th turkey vulture landed &
the 3 stood 15 +/- from condor. One vulture walked
up to condor, then retired to the circle again after
a few seconds. Evidently the condor was standing
on its food & pulling at it with bill, the body lie-
ing in a horizontal standing position. A fourth
vulture in the group at 2:28. These birds were on a
10 +/- E. slope; the ground was sparsely covered with
dry grass (3-4" high). After 2:34 the feeding was
slower, x 10-20 sec. pause interval between nib-
bles. The bird fed facing N, then W, S, E, & N, & W
again at 2:41. By 2:41, 7 turkey vultures loitering
around the lone condor within about 20'. Once
the condor walked toward a buzzard neck out-
stretched - the buzzard retreated & condor apparently
to a morsel at that spot. Apparently more than
one carcass or morsel present. Twice I saw the
condor stretch out its neck & apparently lean over
