Gymnopsis californicus May 8, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif. over the slopes near North Point. The fog was so great that I could not see even Bear Heaven by 3 p.m. I saw no condor until 3:41 when near Parking Canyon. One adult, "crop" bulging, came in from W., gave a wing dip, and sped into lower Parking Canyon as if to flight. I judged soaring conditions poor at that time. Reached Logan's at about 4:15. Apparently no water top Big Cove. The falls of North Creek was dry. Roosting probably would be on Arnoldell Ridge now instead of near Big Cave, but apparently very few condors in this area now. May 9, 1946 Pasadena, Calif. Phoned C.S. Polunin at San Bernardino (Forest Supervisor's office). He said he had never heard reports east of Josephine Plk. (Angelina N.F.) in recent years; except 1 man, supposedly reliable, who said 3 came in annually at a place on the San Bernardino N.F. (report sent to Cramer). Polunin offered to take me to see this man on a future trip. Visited M.R. Durham, district ranger of Arroyo Seco District, Angelina N.F. He said he had seen 2 at Altmore Meadows (Mr. Semill's) about 12 years ago. He had been ranger on the Newhall District from 1931-1934, Arroyo Seco for last 10 years. He was skeptical of reports made by some lookouts as he had had a turkey vulture pointed out to him as a condor.
