Gymnogyps californianus
April 30, 1946 Kern Co., Calif.
thence to Taft and landed at 10:45. Thence re-
turned to Delano over Butterwillow, Shafter,
& Wasco. We saw no condors but a few
buzzards - saw no carcasses. Apparently
these rolling treeless cattle covered foot
hills are favorable for condor feeding grounds.
Near McKittrich the cattle gave way to grain
& oil wells far or to a large extent. Sky
clear, light breeze at surface, air moderately
lumpy in the morning flight. Later in
the day talked with Ranger Oran at Porterville.
He said he had been told of condors near
White River by Walter Lerig (husband of tele-
phone operator there) and had seen them soar-
ing high overhead there. He identified them
by the white patches under the wings & he-
lieves his identification unmistakable.
Oran seems very genuinely interested in
condors. Saw many cattle between Port-
erville & Springville among the grassy
hills (many rough rock outcrops too).

To get a look at the squirrel country east of
Famoso, I left Delano at about 8 a.m. drove
to McFarland, thence east about 8 miles, then
south toward Bakersfield. About 4 miles east
