Gymnogyps californianus
April 24, 1946 Big Pine Lookout, Calif.
approaching about 1/4 mile S. of the cliff point 1+ mile E.
This bird had feet down - it spiraled down sharply,
with wings flexed, twisting to one side then the other
by bending the wing tip down (something like plane
maneuver called the "falling leaf") and swooped
up to a landing on a prominent whitewashed point
about 100' below the highest cliff point (landed 7:18).
Fair NE wind still, sky 1/6 cumulus, increasing haze.
The adult occasionally preened. It stood quietly
facing the cliff. Same at 4:45. 4:44, adult turned back,
wings horizontal + tail spread. Back to sun. 4:46, wings
folded again. 7:48, the adult took off & descended
very rapidly with wings flexed & feet down, occa-
sionally dipping wings, & at 7:50 disappeared be-
hind a ridge about 1/2 mile SE and 800 ft. below
the lookout level as if to land - this canyon not visi-
ble from lookout. At 5 p.m. I left the lookout &
went to head of canyon where the vander disappeared -
there were 3+ whitewashed perch points on cliffs down
this canyon but I could see no vander. Returned to
the lookout.
April 25, 1946 Falls Canyon, Calif.
At 5:25 a.m. I left Big Pine Lookout to hike to
Falls Canyon. Fair E. wind, moderate temperature, &
clear sky - warmer & less windy than yesterday. I
reached the big pines at head of Falls Canyon at 7:40
