Gymnogyps californianus
March 22, 1946 Hopper Canyon, Calif.
about 150 yds. N. of #12 nest on a rock point. 10:59
the condor took off, soared past the nest, & circled
& rose above North Ridge & over the Rim near
White Cliffs. Perhaps this was one of the mating
pair, during the buzzards from the spot. I
have often seen 1 or 2 turkey vultures at this
area this season - perhaps the condors have their
nest hole. Saw another condor circling beyond
the Rim (NE) at about 11:05. By 12:00 saw no more
condors. We worked at getting our cars out of the
mud & returned to Pyramid Lookout at about 2:25.
At 2:30 I saw an adult soaring 100t' above Rock
Ridge & watched it until 2:44 when it swooped
behind Arundell Ridge as if to land there. Dur-
ing the flight the bird descended over Rock Ridge
& landed on a ledge halfway up the cliff, then
took off 15± sec. later, circled over East &
Southeast Canyons (foot) and over foot of
North Slope. Several (3±) times it put flat
down for a few seconds, then raised them. Occ-
asionally it gave a wing dip. Sometimes it cir-
cled & gained altitude & at other times flew-
glided & lost altitude. At 2:35 it joined
another adult & circled with it for 2± min-
utes. At 2:45 saw one jimm. circle &
things rise to W. of the lookout & high above it.
