Gymnogyps californianus
March 17, 1946. Hopper Canyon, G.I.F.
watched this bird from about a half mile - it held
head low as if feeding at flat & went back in
cave several times, each time apparently settling
[rest 12]
down with a shimming motion as if on an egg.
No eating of the weak old first carcass yet.
March 18, 1946. Hopper Canyon, G.I.F.
Calm cold night (first). at 8 a.m. fog up
lower Hopper Canyon at about 3500 ft. level.
We left camp at about 9 a.m. & went to Parking
Place. Fog came up the canyon & engulfed us.
We built a blind of sheet metal under some
bushes in Big Meadow. Fog gradually lifted
above the Rim. At 11:43 one condor soared
over us heading S.E. Breeze was light, air cool.
We saw 3 then perched atop Arundell Ridge on
Saddle Pt. One flew to High Pt. near Flat
Pt.. At 12:15 we saw 6 circling over Arundell
Ridge, rising & more perched. They worked up
the slope to near Pyramid L.O. & headed S.E.
We saw 7 at about 12:23 from Parking Place.
Two were adults, one a near adult, & 4 imm.
aturs. They circled close (100 ft.) over us
soaring slowly. 3't birds had missing #t-4 or 5
primary. One min. had feet down. Ceiling was
about 200' overhead. The two adults came
together - one chased the other briefly. The adults
& 1 min. slid S.E. toward the residue of others
