30 Nov Route 5 Old Grapevine Ranger Station and
Spring #246 Ranger Spring
Gopher sign at ranger station. I set 5 gopher
traps in all the tunnels I could find.
Hiked to spring. Dense growth of Phragmites,
Distichlis, Prosopis (screwbean and glandulose)
The only free water is hidden by dense growth.
[illegible] oppugatus
No sheep sign. Coyote scents. Old pipes and junk.
Surprise Springs #248
Set one line of 50 traps (40 Sherman's, 10 snap)
in a line along ridge crest from Geologic
station at end of road, line went down ridge,
westerly. Traps in alternate 2 and 3 trap stations.
The third trap was the snap, 20 meters apart.
20 stations. Bait: oats coated with peanut butter
and bacon fat. Vegetation: Larrea, Ambrosia
surosa, Atriplex lymenophyta; time 1500.
Weather partly cloudy, temp in 60's,
Set a line of 20 (not really a line, a saturation
pattern) 10 Sherman's 10 snap around willows.
Set a line of 50 (40 Sherman's, 10 snap) as above
gone upstream from point where stream
first approaches road. This is a small, 1 foot
wide, ½ inch at most deep, braided stream,
with much salt dried. Vegetation mostly grasses
a few Beachorps, some Atriplex lymenophyta.
Stream is on the floor of a narrow canyon in
alluvium. Saw a jackrabbit. Gopher sign.
Total this location 120 traps.
Coyote scents.
