Simpley 1980 30 Nov Route 5 Old Grapevine Ranger Station and Spring #246 Ranger Spring Gopher sign at ranger station. I set 5 gopher traps in all the tunnels I could find. Hiked to spring. Dense growth of Phragmites, Distichlis, Prosopis (screwbean and glandulose) The only free water is hidden by dense growth. [illegible] oppugatus No sheep sign. Coyote scents. Old pipes and junk. Surprise Springs #248 Set one line of 50 traps (40 Sherman's, 10 snap) in a line along ridge crest from Geologic station at end of road, line went down ridge, westerly. Traps in alternate 2 and 3 trap stations. The third trap was the snap, 20 meters apart. 20 stations. Bait: oats coated with peanut butter and bacon fat. Vegetation: Larrea, Ambrosia surosa, Atriplex lymenophyta; time 1500. Weather partly cloudy, temp in 60's, Set a line of 20 (not really a line, a saturation pattern) 10 Sherman's 10 snap around willows. Set a line of 50 (40 Sherman's, 10 snap) as above gone upstream from point where stream first approaches road. This is a small, 1 foot wide, ½ inch at most deep, braided stream, with much salt dried. Vegetation mostly grasses a few Beachorps, some Atriplex lymenophyta. Stream is on the floor of a narrow canyon in alluvium. Saw a jackrabbit. Gopher sign. Total this location 120 traps. Coyote scents.
