70 26 NOV Route 5 sites continued same beat as above, in a straight line heading NE from milepost; stations 25 meters apart. No obvious signs of mammals. Weather: today and tonight: beautiful! Camped tonight at Scotty's Castle MPF. 27 NOV Route 5 milepost 10 Mesquite Hummocks Ravens (5 or 6) flying overhead - only birds seen on these areas. Trap success: Ammospermophilus 1 escaped Peromyscus crinitus 1 specimen #468 The trap containing the Ammos had been disturbed by a fox or badger; an area of about 1 meter around the trap had been severely disturbed by digging and/or thrashing the trap around in the sand. No really good tracks - the best looked like kitfox. Left traps in place for another night. 27 NOV Route 5 milepost 14 Nothing! in 60 traps. Left set for a 2nd night. 27 NOV Route 5 milepost 2 Did a plant transect in Atriplex here - no sign of mammals. Then hiked up 1/4 mile to left between mud hills, where there are some mesquites. Nestorina Dipo (deserti?) signs present. A beautiful set of Perognathus flavus tracks in sand. Old Nestorina middens present in S wall of canyon in a cleft; also on ground cottonrat droppings present.
