26 NOV Route 5 sites continued
same beat as above, in a straight
line heading NE from milepost; stations
25 meters apart. No obvious signs of mammals.
Weather: today and tonight: beautiful!
Camped tonight at Scotty's Castle MPF.
27 NOV Route 5 milepost 10 Mesquite Hummocks
Ravens (5 or 6) flying overhead - only birds
seen on these areas.
Trap success:
Ammospermophilus 1 escaped
Peromyscus crinitus 1 specimen #468
The trap containing the Ammos had been
disturbed by a fox or badger; an area of
about 1 meter around the trap had been
severely disturbed by digging and/or thrashing
the trap around in the sand. No really
good tracks - the best looked like kitfox.
Left traps in place for another night.
27 NOV Route 5 milepost 14
Nothing! in 60 traps. Left set for a 2nd night.
27 NOV Route 5 milepost 2
Did a plant transect in Atriplex here -
no sign of mammals. Then hiked up
1/4 mile to left between mud hills, where
there are some mesquites. Nestorina
Dipo (deserti?) signs present. A beautiful
set of Perognathus flavus tracks in
sand. Old Nestorina middens present in
S wall of canyon in a cleft; also on ground
cottonrat droppings present.
