24 Sept 4 miles W of Monument Boundary on Titus Canyon Rd. (continued) 4200 FT.
the most avid shrubs, with large
numbers of Ephedra, Happle poppy, Eriogonum
fasciculatum, Lycium. Very dense shrub land.
To the south of the road about 50-100 meters
is a rather large wash, with sand and
gravel bottom. Most of the plants in the
wash are the same as on the ridge, but..
appear larger and denser. Some specific
coral plants are: Atriplex canescens, Eucelia, Gutierrezia,
Hymenoxys, Salazaria
Weather warm (90's) sunny, cloudless, a light
breeze and occasional gusts (twisters).
Cow and horse droppings, mostly old, are
present. No obvious gopher sign. Soil is
heavy gravel, some rocks, some sand
between stones. Set 120 traps in 3 lines,
all Sherman's, bait dots, (peanut butter,
bacon fat coated on first ridge late),
2 traps/station, stations 20 meters apart. 40+/line
2 parallel lines, N of and parallel to road.
First is 20 meters from road, second is
25-30 meters north of first. Third is in wash,
following closely the north bank of major
channel. Saw 2 hawks (Erythellus?) flying over
head at dusk.
25 Sept same location as above
Awakened at 6:30. At about 6:35 heard a burro braying,
probably 1/4-1/2 mile away, SE of our campsite. Indicates
that burros are coming into our study area.
