Maysleep 1980 Journal 47 24 Sept 4 miles W of Monument Boundary on Titus Canyon Rd. (continued) 4200 FT. the most avid shrubs, with large numbers of Ephedra, Happle poppy, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Lycium. Very dense shrub land. To the south of the road about 50-100 meters is a rather large wash, with sand and gravel bottom. Most of the plants in the wash are the same as on the ridge, but.. appear larger and denser. Some specific coral plants are: Atriplex canescens, Eucelia, Gutierrezia, Hymenoxys, Salazaria Weather warm (90's) sunny, cloudless, a light breeze and occasional gusts (twisters). Cow and horse droppings, mostly old, are present. No obvious gopher sign. Soil is heavy gravel, some rocks, some sand between stones. Set 120 traps in 3 lines, all Sherman's, bait dots, (peanut butter, bacon fat coated on first ridge late), 2 traps/station, stations 20 meters apart. 40+/line 2 parallel lines, N of and parallel to road. First is 20 meters from road, second is 25-30 meters north of first. Third is in wash, following closely the north bank of major channel. Saw 2 hawks (Erythellus?) flying over head at dusk. 25 Sept same location as above Awakened at 6:30. At about 6:35 heard a burro braying, probably 1/4-1/2 mile away, SE of our campsite. Indicates that burros are coming into our study area.
