22 Sept continued 3/2 mi E and 1 mi N Grapevine Peak 5800ft.
for another 100 meters. Ravens, Pinyon Jays,
Buffalo-sided Towhees were the only birds seen.
No mammals seen. Traps set 1500-1700 hrs.
23 Sept same location - Traps success.
Margaret saw a "young rabbit" in valley.
We attempted to net bats at Pleinicy Spring
from 1900-2030. Saw one bat twice or two
bats. This spring shows much evidence
of cattle in contrast to last year when
there was none. There is little grass, much
tampling, and copries. Also deer sign.
23 Sept same location as 22 Sept.
Picked up traps between 0830-1000, Trap success = 0
nothing - nada - a complete bust. A surprise. I would
like to come back in two weeks when there is no
moon to see if that makes a difference. Right now,
based on three results and those of 5 July 1980,
it appears that the P-J-Artmesia ecosystem
has very few animals in it, which is not
what I would expect.
23 Sept Pleinacy Mine shafts
Explored both shafts looking for bats. Saw
12 Pleotis in W shaft, 4 in E. Collected one
from W shaft, am attempting to keep it alive
under refrigeration to bring home to Mike Farrell.
Also collected a Mourning Cloak butterfly that
was lying upside down in E shaft.
