5 mi E and 1 mi N Grapevine Peak 5500 FT.
This is approximately one of the locations cited
by ER Hall in Mammals of Nevada. Harvey
I. Fisher on 2 June 1940 trapped Notiosorex
crawfordi here. HE (evidently) also collected
Sylvilagus auduboni, Perognathus parvus, P. formosus,
Dipodomys microps, Onychomys torridus, Peromyscus
crinitus, P. maniculatus, P. truei, and Neotoma
copida here. The area is sagebrush community,
with pinyons visible on highest hills surrounded
and in valley about 1/4-1/2 mile west and
100-200 feet higher. Sagebrush (Artemisia
tridentata) is dominant on the ridges and valley
here. A valley about 200 yds wide is between
two ridges of a least 40 ft elevation above
valley. Ridge on S side of valley is very rocky,
several rock outcrops and small talus slopes.
Other vegetation that was conspicuous included:
Ephedra (viridis?) in patches, especially on rocky
ridge. Mendota spinicera, Cleophasmus
nanus. Weather was partly cloudy, light breeze,
comfortably warm. A 1/2 moon set around 9 pm.
I set 100 traps Sherman's, oats-peanut butter-bacon
grease bait in 3 lines. Forty traps in line on
rocky ridge on S side of valley beginning at
outcrop nearest road. 40 in valley, 20 in
sand-gravel wash. Area has been impacted
by cattle - a couple of Purshia in wash have
been severely pruned by them. Many cow pies,
old and new), fresh tracks. Set traps by 1800 hs.
