Simpson 80 Journal 34 21 August 1980 (Tuesday) Death Valley, Grapevine Mtus Owl Spring (# 197A) Bullfrog Quadrangle Hiked to spring from Titus Canyon Rd. Map distance about 2.5 miles - it took me about 2 hours to get there. Parked approximately 8 1/2 miles from pavement, headed S between two peaks. En route: quail sign, sheep sign, especially abundant in Owl Spring canyon just South of the saddle between the two peaks, also around the saddle, but getting scarce as I got closer to the spring. No sheep sign at all at the spring area. There were 2 sets of off-road vehicle tracks between Titus Canyon Rd and the saddle. I was thinking nasty thoughts about poachers. There were a couple of well-worn trails, wetted grasses, displaced rocks etc. that I watched for sheep trails. But when I finally got to the spring, the truth became apparent. The remains of a Cessna aircraft were apparent all around the N end of the spring area, the fuel tanks turned upside down on a hill just above one of the largest pools of H2O. Part of the plane made eerie noises in the wind. It left me with a very strange, creepy feeling to know that six people had died here a few months ago. The trails
