24 4-7 July 1980 Strozzi Ranch Rd General comments. Biting flies (no-see-ums) thick in sagebrush area, much less so in P-J cedonal area. Birds in cedonal area were mostly those associated with P-J or wide ranging: Raven Chuckar Blue-gray quailcatcher Black-headed Grosbeak Pluvon Jay Common Bushtit Rufous-sided Towhee Black-throated Sparrow Violet-green Swallow Brewer's Sparrow heard? Birds in sagebrush area were: Black-throated Sparrow, Poorwill, ? Hummingbird (?) This was the worst trip for trap success I've ever had. Out of a total of 357 trap nights only 14 animals were caught, for a total of 3.9% trap success. I tried leaving traps in place 2 nights running, had better success on 2nd night. Tried different bait on 2 lines, with equal success. Because I was involved in another project concerned with bubonic plague, I suspect that a plague has struck the small mammal population in this area. No way to know for sure. Moon was waning half. Weather was "good".
