21 4 July 1980. Strozzi Ranch Rd. 3 1/2 mi NE of Strozzi Ranch 5100 ft. Sagebrush. Rolling ridges and shallow valleys. Sandy-gravelly soil. Approx 1/5 mi E of the road that connects this road to the Plains Canyon Rd. Margaret did vegetation transects here (Nos: ) Arrived about 4 PM. Set 40 Sherman traps baited with oats coated with peanut butter and bacon fat in 20 stations, 20 meters apart, in a line beginning 20 meters SE of road and extending southeasterly 400 meters across ridges and washes. Also set same number, types, arrangement in a line going down the first major wash, intersecting the first line. Also set 5 gopher sets, in wash area. Heard coyotes yipping from about 1/4 mi SE of road. Camped at USGS Seismologic Station. Heard coyotes at night. Saw one rather large bat at campsite. Much evidence of cattle in area, saw several cows grazing nearby. Saw some deer scat. 5 July 1980. Last nights traps caught: Cross ridge line: 0/40 Down wash line: 1 Neotoma (#320)/40 Total 1/80 = 1.25% success The worst ever. Gopher traps: 1/5 1- Thomomys (#319) Left traps set another night, changed bait to just oats on the cross ridge line, to see if bait was the problem.
