17 June 1980 Phiney Mine Shaft Left Las Vegas at about 10:45 this morning, arrived here at 3:30 - a long slow drive, we think the road has deteriorated. Checked weather stations, then climbed the ridge above the mine shaft, exploring. Deer pellets fairly abundant, a few Neotoma nests amongst the rocks. Walked along ridge to rock outcrop about 1/4 mile from pass. There is a small cavern (mine shaft?) amongst the rocks, visible from the road. I examined them, finding evidence of Neotoma in two of the crevices in the cave. Packrat middens under development - come back in 20,000 years! Heard a Eutamias scolding my dogs, but could not see it. It was in the rocks above the cavern. Now I sit with loaded gun, waiting for bats. Saw 3 bats, a pipistrelle and 2 ??, shot twice with 22 dust shot, missed both times. I have found a way to attract bats - a fluorescent lantern which attracts insects, set on the tailgate of the truck, creates a small cloud of moths. Bats come in to feed on the moths. Theoretically, I shoot the bats. But it will take some practice before I can hit the bats! Sat up for one and one-half hours. Slightly windy and drilly - weight have discouraged bats.
