7 June 1980 p.2. incredible amount of trouble
to pack out the bodies. Among the notes
in the register on the peak were the
following: "3-13-80 Dan Brown - Scotty's Castle
DV. I saw 3 mule deer (not bighorns or burros)
on the way up!" and "Nov 29, 1979. We saw
2 bighorns on the way up. D.S. Handsome SFCA"
Surprising that both species should be there,
in what looked to me like optimal sheep
habitat. We left the truck at 9 am,
returned to it at 6:30. a long day's hike.
At intervals along our route we
saw sheep (?) droppings and trails (which
may have been of human origin). I stopped
frequently to examine the terrain with
binoculars, but saw no large animals.
The ground was covered with dense low
shrubs, mostly under 2 ft tall; and
visibility was excellent; so if there were
any large animals in the vicinity, I expect
that I should have seen them. We descended
the peak via a small, rugged canyon
with out let into "Tight-fit Canyon" in section 9.
Unfortunately we were too fatigued to search
for the springs that are supposed to be
near here.
