4 June 1980. Took Titus Canyon road, stopping along the way at lower elevations to check rain gauge and hi-lo thermometer and admire wildflowers. Macraearthura sp. and Castilleja were spectacular. Stopped at turnout saddle approx. 5200 ft. where Grapevine Pk and Buffalog maps meet. Mixed shrub community: Atriplex, Meroxone, Grayia, Hippopappus, Cooperi, Euphoria and others. Hiked N to a small rock pinnacle about 600 ft and 2/3 mile N of turnout. Mostly volcanic, many small talus slopes. Found curious Neotoma nests in small rock caves. Nests (2) were each approx. 1 ft by 2 ft by 6-8 inches tall, made up almost entirely of dozens of small flat rocks each about 2 inches square, greatly overlapped. Photographed these soon after several piles of sleep droppings along our route. Set 4 traplines, total of 140 traps. radiating out from our parking place. N(26) NE(40) ESW(38) SE(36). Set traps approx 20 meters apart, in parts. Sherman traps baited with oats coated with peanut butter and bacon fat. Habitat is relatively homogeneous, although there are a few small rock outcrops, talus slopes, drainages (but no really good washes). North trapline is along the remains of an old road, with plants characteristic of disturbed soil.
