19 May 1980. Spent most of the day hassling, preparing
for trip which was supposed to start today. Just
couldn't get it all together in time so postponed
it a day.
20 May 1980 Arrived at our parking place near Pleinney
Mine at about 2:30 pm. Set off to climb
Wagyuhe Peak with our heavy packs. Climbed
NW side of mountain - took about 3 hours to go
one mile. Very difficult and exhausting, but the
views and the serenity of our campsite was
well worth the effort. Especially hard on dogs,
whose bare feet were injured by the rough rocks
and sharp talus. Followed deer trails. Plenty of
deer sign all over this mountain, but we did
not see any deer. Strange fires - signals? - on military
reservation east of us at night.
21 May 1980 Hiked up to the summit of Wagyuhe.
The register was signed by some guy who
climbed Grapevine and Palmer in one day, then
climbed Wagyuhe "as an after-thought" next day.
Fantastic view - WT swifis & VG swallows zipped
by our heads. No packrat nests obvious on whole
top of mountain. Lots of deer sign. Saw Mountain Bluebirds,
Clark's Nutcrackers, Cassin's Finch, Hermit Thrush,
Chuckadees, Bushtits, Lameo, Pinon Jays, Hummingbird
(probably Black-chinned)
Hiked downhill to our camp at truck, arriving about
4PM. Heard a Whip-poor-will outside our tent.
22 May 1980. Hiked up to pass, W of mine shaft, then
down to Doe Spring. After much searching, located
