3 April cont, p2. The first area was a barren fan, with Tidestromia sp as the only visible perennial (and it's suffrutescent!) Set a line of 40 Sherman, peanut-butter and bacon grease flavored oats, across this area. Area is approximately milepost #1. No sign of any mammals, except what looked like an abandoned Dipodomys deserti burrow. Second area, at approx milepost 1.5, adjacent to first, was dominated by larrea with Tidestromia frequent. Margaret did a transect while I set a line of 40 Sherman's same bait. No obvious sign of mammals here. Third area was dominated by Atriplex hymenolytra (Desert Holly), again, 38-2 broken traps, no mammal sign obvious, Margaret did a transect. Last area was a patch of mesquite hummocks near milepost 7. Set a pair of traps at each hummock, total 20 traps. Ran out of bait. Nesotoma castles in several hummocks, Dipod? diggings also. Coyote scat. 4 April Picked up traps. On Tidestromia flat: 0/40. larrea-Tidestromia area: 0/40 Atriplex area 2/#8 both Dipodomys merriami (#303, 304) Mesquite hummocks 1/20, Dipodomys merriami (#305) Disappointing, but about what I would expect.
