29 Dec 1979 - 1 Jan 1980
Stopped first at Daylight Pass, Daylight Spring. Hiked around looking for H2O with no success. Saw a lot (caso) of clunkers. Then proceeded to "Tight fit Canyon", camp at mouth of canyon, liked in moonlight about 1 mile up canyon. Next day hiked up canyon about 2 miles. Looks like good sheep habitat, but saw no sheep or signs of them.
30 Dec 1979 - Drove around W side of Grapevines to DRI trailer, mapping veg. communities.
31 Dec hiked to "Surprise Springs", saw an old pack rat midden which we slowed collect, found owl pellets with packrat bones.
Drove around the range to Hooligan Mine, looked for but did not find a spring nearby; drove to McDonald Spring - saw ca. 20 cow and 4 horses. Spring is severely "corved" as is surrounding area. Camped about one mile E of spring. Hit the sack at 7 PM on new year's eve.
1 Jan 1980 - awoke to watch a coyote breakfasting on the carcass of a long-dead cow as we had our breakfast. Proceeded to our former Mexican camp rd site (of 1-2 Sept) where we stopped for a few minutes. Then went home.
No trapping this trip.
