22-24 November 1979 Willow Spring Road
Arrived at washout of road about 1 PM.
Parked in Creosote - Frangeria at edge of
wash, hiked along road to its end,
about 1/4 mile from willow spring.
Much coyote scat along road, also
Ammospermophilus (?) holes. A few old
cow pipe and equine droppings.
Several jackrabbits and collontails.
Camped on ridge [illegible] N.E.E. of willow
spring. Next day (23) hiked to willow
spring. There are 3 quite different
springs on same hill, 2 have dense
small patch of willows, with grass
and sedge abundant. One (in middle)
has mostly Beecham and grass-sedge.
Evidence of sleep at all 3, no recent
cow or equine evidence. Many quail,
some Chukars, Marshhawk, Keftel,
W.C. Sparrows. Saw a Coyote as
we approached springs. Hiked back
to vehicle and set 80 traps in 2 lines
Sherman traps baited c. rolled oats,
2 per station, stations 20 meter apart.
1 line across desert pavement, second
along wash. Heard Coyotes at night.
24th Line one caught 6 Dipsos - (#244-253)
microtops and merriami. Line 2 caught 8
9 Dipsos and 1 Onychomys. (# 254-263) (20/80=25%)
