16-18 Aug 79 continued p 2 several years ago. The fence has been pretty thoroughly destroyed (G. Vegquist says "by horses"). About 1/4 mile N of spring, found a dead cow, mostly eaten. Beside stream, found a dead fawn, mostly eaten; head brought back as a specimen (#152). Carcase was eviscerated, paunch split but left lying near carcass; fore legs turned around, pointing upward; No tracks or other sign of predator visible. Carcase was not covered or hidden. Saw a live fawn, spots almost gone, good gait, flushed in wash. Saw a doe on ridge SE of canyon. No other deer sign. Also much cow sign, and a couple of cows seen. Spring area has been pretty heavily cowed. Found skull-#153-mule deer %- among rocks in small canyon S of this spring. Proceeded in search of spring 220- think we found it, but it was dry, just a patch of lush vegetation- sawnuckles; then continued up canyon to spring # 218. Spring #218 was a small stream, ca 100 ft long, dense willows, roses, and columbines (in flower). Some cow sign, but branches of dead willows created a fence protecting some of the vegetation. Found a stone corral and remains of a shack near here.
