16 August 1979, Strozzi Ranch
Arrived about 3 pm, proceeded up like
up canyon SSE of ranch, very rugged steep
and rocky. Some interesting rock formations.
Deer sign, cow sign, porcupine sign (quavering
of pinews) hiked most of the way up the
canyon, then back to ranch along ridge
E of ranch, and downhill.
Set 40 live traps baited with oats, shortly
after dark. Some rain (sprinkles) this
night. Set traps along road every
25 steps, S side of road, within 10 feet
of roadside.
17 August 1979, best night's traps caught 5
specimens 137-142. Left traps (34 of them)
set all day in hopes of catching
ground squirrels or chipmunks (unsuccessful).
in A.M., set 40 live traps baited with oats
in line perpendicular to first line,
starting near top of rocky ridge SE
of camp, going down across road, then
up and over ridge NW, ending in valley.
Left them set for 24 hours.
Spent afternoon hiking, first NE along
road, then E. and S to springs
219, 220, and 218, then up over ridge
to camp. Spring #219 is a stream, 150-200
ft long, beginning from a mud patch
on bank of wash. Fenced by Park Service
