3-7 August 1979 Furnace Creek, Scotty's
Castle, Phinney Canyon, Phinney Spring,
4093 Canyon.
3 August. Departed in afternoon for drive
to Furnace Creek Headquarters, arriving at
4:15. Spoke with dispatcher, Mrs Ek, who
arranged our accommodations and
introduced us to the library. Spoke
with Pete Sanchez, who pointed out
some of the information he has
compiled and gave us access permission.
He was extremely helpful and personable,
we look forward to much more contact
with him. Copied information from
the spring book about the springs
that we intended to visit. Spent the
night in a park service trailer.
4 August Arose before dawn and
were on our way along the highway
northward. Saw an apparently injured
Black-crowned Night Heron hopping
beside the road, midway between
Furnace Creek and the Starpipe Wells
turnoff. Stopped in a few places
to photograph and botanize.
Found a few scraps of a dead
(and eaten) dog (Canis familiaris)
near the radiator water tank.
Stopped at a cottonwood grove.
