23 July 1979 continued Obviously we need to return to the peak many times. Much horse and deer sign up here. We returned to the vehicle in the afternoon, the trip lasting only about 2 hours. Saw a rattlesnake in a talus slope that we crossed, it rattled and disappeared under a rock. Too tired to set traps this night. 24 July 1979 Hiked to "Phinney Mine" and "Phinney Spring". Between mine and spring found a dead mule deer carcass (spotted) under a pinon. Much of the deer had been eaten, the head almost completely destroyed, skull splintered; abdomen opened and viscera (largely removed) and (presumed) eaten; neck twisted; strangely, the legs were mostly intact. Carcass was soft, moist, not very ripe, infested with sexton beetles and some maggots. Looked like the work of a mountain lion. Out and around spring, much deer sign. No cow or horse sign! Though both can be found within 1/2 mile. Returned home at about 12:30. saw only one jackrabbit along road on way out. Saw many cows (40) and a group of 11 equines: 1 burro 3 mules 7 horses along road, near
