23 July 1979 continued
Obviously we need to return to the
peak many times. Much horse and deer
sign up here. We returned to the
vehicle in the afternoon, the trip lasting
only about 2 hours. Saw a rattlesnake
in a talus slope that we crossed, it
rattled and disappeared under a
rock. Too tired to set traps this night.
24 July 1979 Hiked to "Phinney Mine" and
"Phinney Spring". Between mine
and spring found a dead mule deer
carcass (spotted) under a pinon. Much
of the deer had been eaten, the head
almost completely destroyed, skull
splintered; abdomen opened and viscera
(largely removed) and (presumed) eaten;
neck twisted; strangely, the legs were
mostly intact. Carcass was soft, moist,
not very ripe, infested with sexton beetles
and some maggots. Looked like the
work of a mountain lion.
Out and around spring, much deer
sign. No cow or horse sign! Though
both can be found within 1/2 mile.
Returned home at about 12:30.
saw only one jackrabbit along road
on way out. Saw many cows (40)
and a group of 11 equines: 1 burro
3 mules 7 horses along road, near
