Results of last night's trapping?
9 Peromyscus (107-115), two of which
(114,115) recorded data only, the others
preserved with Caltrax. Saw packrat sign
in rock crevices, but caught none.
After preparing specimens, we proceeded
to our goal: Grapevine Peak. Much
of the way we followed horse trails,
but did not see any horses, though
we saw some fairly fresh (less than
1 week old) horse sign. Camped on
the edge of a sagebrush meadow, set
30 snap traps (peanut butter and oats)
across meadow. Hiked to top of
peak, through limber pines. At top
of peak, found a register signed by
those other hardy souls who had
made the ascent, most of whom
made it in under 3 hours! (But
they were probably weren't carrying
40 lb packs). liquid rain during the
night.
23 July 1979 Results of last night's trapping?
10 P. maniculatus (116-124, one not examined
closely because it was infested with ants).
left traps set until 2:30 pm in the hopes
of catching diurnal beasts, but had no
success. There are many burro entrances
(ground squirrels?) and much gopher sign.
