7-24 July 1979
Kept us indoors (in the Scout) almost all day.
Set 30 Muskrat Special snap traps baited
with Peanut Butter and Quick Rolled oats, up the
narrow rocky canyon N of camp. Rained
at night. Heard a Screech Owl.
21 July 1979 results of last night's trapping:
2 Peromyscus (#105, 106). Many of the traps
had been set off by the rain. One caught
a Newtowna by the tail. The rat dragged
the trap much of the way under a boulder,
than managed to slip the skin off the
tail, so I found the tail skin in the
trap. After prep'ing the specimen, we set
off on our packing trip. A rugged uphill
climb with 40 pound packs for two
hikers in rather poor shape. We collapsed
about 1/2 way to our goal, atop a
ridge 13/8 mi E and 1/4 mi S of Grapevine
Peak (7840'). Saw considerable Horse
sign and some Deer sign over much
of our route and around our campsite.
Set 24 snap traps, baited with peanut
butter and Quick Rolled oats, in a line
through our campsite. Beginning on
a rocky outcrop, then up a small
ridge, down the steep otherside of it.
Habitat essentially similar to the
area around the windshaft. It did
not rain this night.
