10 July DEVA - Strozzi Ranch Cows not as noisy and conspicuous as they were last time we were here. From top of hill, we had a magnificent view of nearly (10+) square miles. Saw no cows, or any other large animals. [illegible] Numerous (20+) bats last night. Picked up (closed) traps in morning 7-8. Caught 2 Peromyscus (98,99 ) and one Perognathus #97 Climbed to top (almost) of Waquyhe Peak - a long arduous trip, but well worth it. On the way up, we saw a doe mule deer, 2+ yrs old; a 4-point buck; returning, we saw a yearling doe and (separately) 2 spotted fawns. The fawns were large (over 3 ft long), fat, somewhat clumsy, chocolatey-gray with roset of white spots. They fled from us (flushed as we approached) the first one (the younger) with a rather clumsy slow trot, the second with more-or-less the bounding flight characteristic of the species. Saw several jackrabbits in the valley and along slopes, beat at the higher elevations, but not at the peak. Saw 2 cottontails, very near the top of the mountain, but did not get a very good look at either of them. Plentiful gopher (?) diggings in the valley by which we approached the mountain and some on top of the mountain but not in the immediate
