8 July Strozzi Ranch continued
Hiked about 1/2 way up Waquyle Peak, saw-
at least 8 cows, much of the area is heavily
impacted by them. Cow pies very abundant,
much evidence of overgrazing. Saw one cow
with brand: WO. Many deer (?) trails, much
sign of deer (? or sheep?) but no fresh scat
or tracks. Mountain lion scat (?) under
large pines, in a small depression, large
feces - human sized - full of hair and bone
fragments. Saw a chipmunk 1/2 way up slope.
Much evidence of tree cutting. Have the
junipers been mostly removed? There are
some junipers still standing, some with
several branches cut, but the tree still
alive, and some stumps. In the evening,
arond 6:30, saw a Gray Fox among the
rocks E of our campsite, walking in no
hurry, but disappearing among woodlits and
vegetation. Continued our trap line uphill,
among rocks and pines and junipers. Saw-
Neotoma nests among rocks. Set total of
80 traps, as before in pairs one snap one
live, baited with rolled oats (live) or peanut
butter and oats (snap). In returning, found:
2 Peromyscus truei (93, 94); 5 P. maniculatus
(92, 95, 96) plus 2 freed; 7/80, 4 traps sprung
no beast. Hiked to top of small hill, resetting live
traps in afternoon, set 40 live traps, baited
with oats.
