7- July Strozzi Ranch revisited
On the way here, about 3 mi E of short road connecting Strozzi Ranch road to Pliny Canyon Rd, saw a coyote among sagebrush. Stopped the car and watched it. It trotted about 50 ft, turned and watched us for 5-10 seconds, trotted another 100 ft, down into, across a small wash, stopped on opposite bank and looked at us again, then wandered off out of sight.
Saw many cows, jackrabbits, ground squirrels (A. canescens), cottontails (sp.) along road.
Set 50 traps up and downstream from improved spring, along water, along rocky wash, then a little uphill to pinyons.
Traps set in pairs, Museum Special baited with peanut butter, Sherman baited with Quick Rolled Oats. Set up bat net, crossed out 20 feet downstream from improved spring,
caught 2 Violet-green Swallows, no bats.
Saw numerous (20+) bats: pipistrelle, Myotis? and ??, all of which avoided the net. Activity was greatest from 8 pm to 9 pm. Tapered off by 9:30. Took down net at 10 pm
