into the wilderness area. We were
searching, unsuccessfully, for the spring
indicated on the map. Habitat is Pinyon
with a few Junipers, understory primarily
Cortemisia. Steep hills around us.
A spectacular view from the pass,
looking W to the Sierras, E to
? range. Found the [illegible] leg of a mule
deer along road on W side of ridge,
eaten up by ?? Birds & R.S. Towhee
(common, singing) Robin (H?) Chickadee (H -
saw but not well) Bushtits (common)
Sage Sparrow (uncommon) B.C. Sparrow (H)
Scrub Jay (common) R.S. Flicker (uncommon)
BH Grosbeak (H?) Brewer's Sparrow (H?)
BTG Warbler (uncommon) another
warbler (white throat, black on chest,
white edged tailed - gaked like Audubon's)
B.G. Gnatcatcher (common), Empidonax
(uncommon) W.W.Poetee (?) W.T. Swifts-
several flying around pass; R.T. Hawk;
B.Tail Hummingbird (not abundant, but
noisy) Rock Wren (common). Saw
no rabbits this day. Deer scat.
Coyote scat, lizards: Sceloporus (occidentalis?)
fairly common. (May be graciosus), Leopard
lizard along road yesterday. Red Racer along
road out of here. Insects: Giant Ants
caught in camp last night; seemed
solitary, 2 large, one smaller (same?)
