25 June 1979 Phinney Mine Shaft
Along Phinney Canyon Rd, approx 7 mi E Grapevine Pk
we saw 5 horses- apparently "wild" near a
group of cattle. All of these animals probably
water at Currie Well. It is possible that
the "burro" signs we saw at Currie Well
and Phinney Canyon Rd, are actually horse
signs. Camped about 200' E of "shaft"
indicated on map. Set 80 traps along road,
one line uphill from camp, the other
downhill. Set traps in pairs, one of each
pair baited with horse oats, the other
with Quick Oats, in an attempt to
test effectiveness of each bait. Saw a
single rather large bat overhead at night-
Eccoptis?
26 June 1979 Phinney Mine Shaft
Checked traps, 7 am: Peromyscus maniculatus:
5 (#74,77-kept, others freed) 3 with Quick Oats
2 with horse oats; Peromyscus truei: 3 (#75,
76, 78) 1 with Quick Oats, 2 with Horse Oats.
Total 8/80 = 10%; Quick Oats = Horse Oats.
Left traps open all day, caught one
Entaeias pennantinus # 79. Saw one
Entaeias in a piton while setting traps
this evening. Set 40 more traps, same
bait system, in a line perpendicular
to road, up rocky hillside, in evening.
This day we walked to the end of the
road, which is actually about one mile
