Elk Alston 1955 Journal April 26 Patches of snow in draws and under the trees above 1500 feet. Intermittent light showers and sunshine at Morjosa where we made stop at noon. Bear Creek on way to Bridalveil was clear, medium high - but some other tributaries high and muddy. Collecting stop at Bridalveil 2 p.m. Unsettled skies, cool. Ground quite damp from recent rains. Creeper, Tanila Batidrosipes, Eumeces gilberti, Diadophis, Rana collected but no Hydromantes. We checked our stitch of Hwy 140 a few miles east of Bridalveil where heavy seeps forming small pools along road. One Tonika (juvenile) under rock. Nothing else. Snow persists on slopes above about 1500-2000 feet. Light snow falling just before we reached Yosemite Valley. The area has received much recent snow, about 6-10" stands on valley floor. By 4:30 p.m. snowfall picked up. Snow ceased falling by 6:30 p.m. and by 9:30 the skies clear with early phase of new moon lighting Valley. Air temp. 9:30 p.m. = -0.2°C. Quick check of Stevenson and dartical meadows. Ibysa chasing. No toads heard or seen. April 27 Water in jars kept in car froze solid last night. Today clear ad sunny. Fort thaw apparent as early as 9 A.M. Check of Stevenson meter 10-12 A.M. Not snow off has by noon, and snow melted partially in meadow.
