EL Karstens 1955 Journal April 12 the Valley floor looks snow and it is partly on the river bed in the draws. Practically none on south-facing rim. The meadows are much drier than this time last year (see Buffalo accounts). Wolf Den has relatively small footprints on top. meadow are 9/10ths brown, but green grasses are appearing. Weather remained still and quite clear into the evening, much water in the major [illegible] the river is not high, and many small tributaries to it are bone dry. The forecast appears to be one of Yosemite's (California's) driest seasons. Evening check of several meadows in Yosemite Valley. meadow S & SW of Court Center - Hyla active but no signs of Bufo. Thamnophis observed in a pool, apparently preying on Hyla. Air tense. 7:50 P.M. 7.3° C. 1" above dry meadow grass. Evening clear and cool, no freeze. Also checked stream meadow. April 13 Bright, clear cool morning 6:30 A.M. Worked at museum reading weather equipment for field. Set up weather station 9:30-12:30 in Lateral meadow. Dizzy sun after 10 A.M. following clear morning. Warm, T-shirt valley, weather out in the meadow (Gas 3.1 gallons #1.00) check along Glacier Point road 1:15-3 P.M. cloudy sky, cool above 5000 feet. Left Valley 4:30 P.M. after getting 3.1 gallons Yosemite "liquid gold". Speedometer (750.1) Very
