Feb. 17 Left Berkeley 4:35 A.M. MV2 truck with Bol-
and son John Stebbins, Dick Russell. Used
route Walnut Creek, Tracy, Merced. Heavy but
patchy fog, particularly on western 1/2 of Sacramento
Valley. Arrived Merced 7:45 A.M., gas store.
Took State Hwy 140 to Yosemite. Overcast, slight
drizzle in foothills. Placoda 116.4. Possible
Scaphiognathus localities where creek crosses road
124.3 and 124.9, Lloyds Canal 129.7, Mt Bullion
cutoff (to Hwy 49) 139.1.
First stop 2 1/2 mi. S of Brucelburg, 2400 feet
Mojavea Co., Calif. Checked W and SW facing slopes
above Bear Creek. Toucha torosa snail on road
bed and I took one & 2 feet from creek. Moisture
on slope at this time but possibly too dry
in summer for plethodontids.
Next stop further down the Brucelburg Grade (149.7)
(Copeadora)
actually 1.6 road miles S of Brucelburg but official
locality written first by Stebbins as 2 mi. S
of Brucelburg, 1900 feet, Mojavea Co., California
NE facing slope 30-40°. Small creek cascades down
to pass thru recently built culvert along and under
newly widened and paved Hwy 140. Slope here
have been "control"-burned last September. Rock
blasted off hillside above (W of) the road. Dr.
Gorman had previously collected Ensatina e. xanthoptica
here. Russell discovered first Hydromantes drummii
and R. Stebbins took another, I took 3 Toucha
[illegible]
also snails.
