El Kadarum 1955 Journal Feb. 17 Left Berkeley 4:35 A.M. MV2 truck with Bol- and son John Stebbins, Dick Russell. Used route Walnut Creek, Tracy, Merced. Heavy but patchy fog, particularly on western 1/2 of Sacramento Valley. Arrived Merced 7:45 A.M., gas store. Took State Hwy 140 to Yosemite. Overcast, slight drizzle in foothills. Placoda 116.4. Possible Scaphiognathus localities where creek crosses road 124.3 and 124.9, Lloyds Canal 129.7, Mt Bullion cutoff (to Hwy 49) 139.1. First stop 2 1/2 mi. S of Brucelburg, 2400 feet Mojavea Co., Calif. Checked W and SW facing slopes above Bear Creek. Toucha torosa snail on road bed and I took one & 2 feet from creek. Moisture on slope at this time but possibly too dry in summer for plethodontids. Next stop further down the Brucelburg Grade (149.7) (Copeadora) actually 1.6 road miles S of Brucelburg but official locality written first by Stebbins as 2 mi. S of Brucelburg, 1900 feet, Mojavea Co., California NE facing slope 30-40°. Small creek cascades down to pass thru recently built culvert along and under newly widened and paved Hwy 140. Slope here have been "control"-burned last September. Rock blasted off hillside above (W of) the road. Dr. Gorman had previously collected Ensatina e. xanthoptica here. Russell discovered first Hydromantes drummii and R. Stebbins took another, I took 3 Toucha [illegible] also snails.
