El Karlstrum Bufo boreas June 30 Upper Blue Lake, 8100 ft, Algine Co., Caly. recorded previous log. Water flowing, to 2" deep under log, 18.5° C. Vaughtlander #8 closeup of site facing SE. The first boreas I found were under a log 8-10' x 1' lying 40 feet from edge of lake, no less than 17 adult toads in water to 1½" deep under log. I collected whole group. Two other adult toads found in water about 6" deep at lake margin. Later I found 3 subadults in surface seep among low willow growth about 50 yards up from lake. Boreas exhibit its lack of diurnality even at this elevation and under existing cool conditions and high water. 25 of 33 toads were found under logs, including one pair in anglefuz. Air temp. 1" above wet meadow were 16-19° C. from about 3:15-5 p.m. in area. No boreas eggs found. Lack of additurs (usually no diurnal) causes a puzzle. This might suggest that boreas out-conjects canorus in this local area at least (?)
