Upper Blue Lake, 8100 ft., Alpine Co., Calif.
NE side of lake, 1/2 nd distance of lake from upper
(NW) end. Two toads jumped in lake from edge as
I approached along road. Basking adult O> 23.4°C.
on wet soil full sunlight. Air temp 1" above
substrate 18.8° C. Substrate 25.8° C. Buller giant under
soil. Water 1" below surface 16.0°C. Where toad
jumped, snow along nearly entire border of lake but
patchy on this exposed side. Margin of lake still
frozen in places. Westerly winds now have piled up
ice at lee side of lake. Heavy melt and earth
slides have torn out wood many places NE side
of lake. Heavy stream and surface run-off slope
below The Needle and willows, give over NW end lake.
Poi in angulus under trough 6' x 6" half buried
in bog. Closest of O> 16°C. Air temp (buller strided)
1" above wet grass 17.8° C. 4:25 P.M. Trotter
ad. O> 6" from poi'. 30 feet from edge lake.
Temp edge of lake 14.5° adjacent to small (12'x15'
x 6') snow patcher. Temp 1" below surface 6' out
in water 6" deep (possible breeding site with
sedges) 18.4° C. Two adult molde found in water
at lake edge.
Another log 16 x 8" ten feet from one just
described. Adult O> B. carinus with 3 O> larve
are unattached & loose (gravid) First known
proven
